Just catching up on some missed television from the holiday, checking out last week's Project Runway and - WHOA SJP got some work done! Yikes. I guess she's getting in gear for the upcoming Sex and the City movie (which Gothamist had it's eye on today). Those squinty cat eyes are scary! Ugh. And another perfectly attractive face bites the dust.
Jeanne Tripplehorn is going to play Jackie O in the upcoming Grey Gardens film. I'm still nowhere near over the casting of Drew Barrymore as Little Edie, but I freakin love Jeanne Tripplehorn, and look forward to seeing her in this. Beyond the fact that she so strikingly resembles Jackie O, my favorite part of her performances in Big Love is how she manages to remain composed and poised even when she's totally losing it, which seems like it would translate well to playing a first lady. Hey, remember when she was in The Firm opposite Tom Cruise, and she almost went all the way with sleazy Gene Hackman? Good times.
Winona Ryder is playing Spock's mom in the Star Trek movies that they're apparently still making. [Insert joke about Ryder's career here.] Heroes star Zachary Quinto will play Spock. Wait, don't those two only look about 5-7 years different in age?
And Mayor Bloomberg recently shot a cameo in the Sex and the City movie. Huh. Remember when Ed Koch was in the SATC fashion show episode? More good times.
More news on the Sex and the City front: the film will debut against not one but two sure-fire box office hits: the new Indiana Jones movie, and Judd Apatow's Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I'm picturing Sarah Jessica making that same "what?!?" reaction face as when Carrie heard about Big's engagement.
Also, (spoiler alert), I read the breakdown for SATC today, and it looks like somebody's living in the Lower East Side (it's gotta be Carrie, she would never live in today's upper east side), and a major plot line includes Carrie's personal assistant. Did she strike it rich(er) from red-hot book sales en Paris? Or are we now enjoying wedded bliss and sharing Big's wealth? Maybe Carrie found her true calling designing top-of-the-line couture footwear.
Chris Noth has signed on for the Sex and the City movie, per Variety. Not much info on the plot yet, but one Apartment Therapy commenter imagined Carrie struggling with life in present day NYC by facing the quintessential nightmare of every New Yorker - a bed bug infestation. Gross, but accurate!
The actors of New York are likely breathing a collective sigh of relief today: NBC has announced that all three Law & Orders will be back with new episodes this fall. Criminal Intent will move to NBC's cable channel, USA, while "original recipie" and SVU will remain on NBC.
NBC brings more good news with the full-season pickup of new series Lipstick Jungle, based on the book by Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell. The series will tape here in NY, and stars Kim Raver, Brooke Shields, and Lindsay Price as numbers 8, 12, and 17 of "New York's 50 Most Powerful Women", according to the NY Post. If it stays true to the book, one is a fashion designer, another is a high-powered film executive, and the third is editor-in-chief of an important magazine. Some familiar names are involved - Scott Cohen (Losing Louie), the adorable lil' Sarah Hyland of Grey Gardens, Andrew McCarthy. David Alan Basche and Matt Morrison are both listed as playing the same role - wonder who the real "Mike Harkness" is. Also featured is my friend, the very funny Seth Kirschner, who people seem to recognize from web-based show We Need Girlfriends. I'm learning from him that a LOT of people watch this show via youtube and myspace - more than I ever thought were watching webisodes. Is web tv finally approaching the tipping point?
The novel Lipstick Jungle is a fun jaunt, and I still (embarassingly) find myself watching the reruns of SATC on TBS, even though I've seen each episode approximately eleven millionty times. Could this be a made-in-New-York show with sticking power? Fingers crossed.
