Abigail Breslin and the Celebrity Casting Debacle

The casting of Abigail Breslin as Helen Keller in the upcoming Broadway production of The Miracle Worker has ruffled feathers far beyond the expected anti-celeb theater gossips. An advocacy group called Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts has strongly opposed the casting choice, on the grounds of "human and artistic issues" that trump the economic realities of needing a star to succeed on Broadway. Meanwhile, lead producer David Richenthal says it would be "financially irresponsible to approach a major revival without making a serious effort to get a star." His comment is sadly hard to argue with, with plays like A Steady Rain, Hamlet, Equus, and God of Carnage making major bank while Brighton Beach Memoirs, Oleanna, Superior Donuts and Reasons to be Pretty don't sell. If you take on Broadway without an A-list star, are you embracing economic failure with arms open wide for the sake of artistic integrity? Or, is it a game of risk, and better to just cast a star and hope that their gifts translate to the stage (a la Daniel Radcliffe), with the added insurance that even if they suck, tickets will still sell based on name alone. Then you have productions like the Roundabout's Bye Bye Birdie, with stars who are not starry enough to guarantee sales, who also happen to flatline onstage (to my previously-noted delight). The alternative seems to be hiring theater stalwarts, or just-pretty-famous actors who you know will kick ass (like Laurie Metcalf), and hoping they turn in a performance so staggeringly astonishing that it creates the kind of buzz that makes the out-of-towners actually take note. And August Osage County ain't an easy thing to achieve, folks.

To get back to the point of the "human and artistic issues", it would certainly be exciting to see a young hearing-impaired/visually-impaired actress take on Keller. It would be an incredible challenge, and if they pulled it off, it might actually make me interested in seeing the freakin Miracle Worker. But maybe such a challenge is too risky for Broadway these days.

The casting of A Behanding in Spokane, Martin McDonough's next Broadway venture, seems to be a fun alternative to the usual ickiness of stunt casting. Having read it, I have very little doubt that Chris Rock will be absolutely terrific, and I would watch Sam Rockwell and Zoe Kazan every day if I could. It's a ridiculous, scary and fun play, and absolute vintage McDonough. Get excited.

Rabbit Hole to be the next Hedwig???

I'm hearing that John Cameron Mitchell is directing the Rabbit Hole film. No lie. Because when I think of Rabbit Hole, the tragedy, the grief, the dark humor and quiet introspection, what really springs to mind is Hedwig and Shortbus, the two features Mitchell has directed. I do love that Hedwig! This will be GREAT!

Actually, wait, no, this makes Absolutely No Sense. Someone, please explain? Because I thought April Fool's Day was tomorrow, not today.

Shooting starts June 1st, Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart will star.

Portia De Rossi Apologizes for Getting Married

Speaks for itself:

Could Portia and Ellen be America's Sweethearts? This cockeyed optimist thinks so!

Ooo-belee-oo.

In honor of the long-overdue Broadway revival that opened last night, Vanity Fair did an amazing, moderately strange photo shoot recreating scenes from the iconic 1961 film version of West Side Story. The jets, sharks, and their ladies are played by a smorgasbord of hot young things, and Jennifer Lopez plays Anita. Once you get over J.Lo's va-va-voom factor, see if you can spot Robert Pattinson, Brittany Snow, Ashley Tisdale, and other cute, moderately out-of-place teen stars.

happy monday

Good afternoon, lads and lasses. Today I'm reporting from midtown, which will be renamed ghosttown in honor of today's blissfully blizzardy quiet.

I'm very excited at Friday's news of a Damn Yankees movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal (pictured above, you're welcome) and Jim Carrey. Jake Gyllenhall is totes the movie star version of Cheyenne Jackson. Sorry Cheyenne. But who will play Lola? Penelope Cruz is already doing a musical. I'm betting they'll go with Anne Hathaway or Evan Rachel Wood. Oooh I wonder if my ladycrush Eva Green can sing?

A little update on the Suckwatch: Guys & Dolls front: the notices are in, and they're not pretty. In fact, Variety actually says "the production sucks the personality out of an American musical-theater classic." Seeing it on Thursday and will report back... I will admit, even these rancid reviews can't crush my excitement to hear "Fugue for Tinhorns."

Ouch

According to VIP Hollywood Insider Nikki Finke, Frank Langella waited until Oscar voting was closed to leave his long, long, longtime agent at Innovative and move to William Morris. Langella seems like a perfect fit for WMA, notorious for repping those serious (stodgy) and seasoned (old) actors.

Why did he wait to leave until the voting was closed? Perhaps he was afraid that the academy members are hardcore Innovative supporters? Oooh, maybe there will be a big showdown of "Team Innovative" and "Team WMA" t-shirts on the red carpet. Or everyone will just stare slack-jawed at Robert Pattinson, as originally planned. Probably the latter.

truer words were never spoken

In a post titled "Batman Goes Batshit," Ken Levine drops a truth-bomb on Christian Bale's recent on-set shenanigans:

Soon we’ll see more damage control. He’ll guest on Ellen and bake a pie. He’ll join the Jonas Brothers on stage and sing “What I Go to School For”.

He’ll be charming and witty and self-deprecating. He’ll tell Oprah a heartbreaking story of going to a children’s hospital… or at least knowing someone who did who relayed the story. And all I can say is…

DON’T YOU BELIEVE IT.

When an actor becomes an absolute monster, lashing out (usually at defenseless underlings) that’s because he IS a monster.

William Goldman once wrote that from the minute stars get up in the morning until the minute they go to sleep no one says ‘no’ to them. Imagine living your life like that. Everything you want some toady gets for you. You’re allowed to be a complete flaming asshole. All because Batman sold a lot of tickets.

And for every Christian Bale shit fit that hits the internet, there must be ten other out-of-control actor outbursts that don’t. This is not to say that every star is a nightmare. Some handle their fame with grace and humanity. But there are enough of these childish temper tantrums from spoiled inbred poodles to keep directors and producers and writers and directors of photography popping Lexipro like Pez tablets.
'Nuff said.

Actors: They're Real People, Too

I kinda like this photo of Fred Armisen and friends, backstage at the Barrymore where his girlfriend is currently employed. They're playing Rock Band. They're having fun. Stars! They're just like us!

On the other hand, is it really news that Lizzie Moss and her boyfriend do regular stuff like play video games while enjoying a nice glass of wine? Okay, it's news because they're famous and all, but this is the Times, not PageSix Magazine, and reading about her hushed whispers in his ear to "hang out in my dressing room" makes me feel creepy.

Ben Brantley is a Motherfucker

...according to Josh Brolin, that is!

“I hate that motherf——-,” Brolin says, “And I don’t think he’s a good writer.”

Update 1/7/09: Defamer brings us more from the delightfully inebriated Brolin's speech that night:

"Quite an actor, Sean Penn, quite an actor. [Pause] Amazing. [Pause] And now I'm an asshole. Like Russell Crowe. Because I'm not as smart as Sean. [Pause] Quite an actor. [Pause] Amazing actor. I've loved you in Milk, I thought what you did with that role was incredible. We've known you as an actor who doesn't smile very much. And the fact that you smiled as much as you did in this film is amazing. Truly incredible. You are an amazing actor. You are going to get the Oscar. Because you smiled so much."

Amazing, indeed! Yes, Sean Penn is quite an actor.

Things the World Does Not Need: "Please God, No!" Edition

"It’s a dream that I want to achieve in the future."

Those, my friends, are the words of Mariah Carey (remember her? She starred in Glitter, pictured above?), in reference to the possibility of her performing a London production of The Prince and the Showgirl, to which she owns the rights. Please Mimi, please don't bring your emancipation to the stage! Say it with me, "Please God, No!"
